Training
Most important to get started on that newly acquired yacht is training on the many complex systems.  Proper training will result in enjoyable days out on the water knowing how everything works.  Equally important, is knowing when things are not working correctly.  Training from a professional Captain like myself, with years of experience, in many types of yachts, will help avoid a long and sometimes expensive learning curve.

Electronics have become all important in the many aspects of boating from navigation, electronic engine monitoring and controls, and communications.

  • Chartplotter -  Navistar, Furuno, Raymarine, Nobeltec, Maptech, Garmin.
  • Radar - Furuno, Raytheon
  • GPS - Garmin,
  • Communication - VHF (FCC license) SSB, Satphone
  • Controls - MarineNet

Yacht safety is achieved by administering a pre-float checklist that, like airline pilots, review for the 1000th time, but still run through the checklist.  This list is given to the new Captain to insure nothing is overlooked.

  • MOB - (man over board) procedures
  • Fire - recognizing type and procedures for fighting
  • Flooding - Procedures for identifying where and how to stop
  • Weather - avoiding and handling when not possible
  • Passenger education - their role in above
